By mail if you are eligible to renew by mail, otherwise in person at an interview at an Australian Embassy or consulate office, by appointment. New passports are sent by FedEx.

Step by step

  1. Check whether you are eligible to renew by mail.
  2. Mail renewal: send your completed application, payment and, if needed, the Credit Card Authorisation Form.
  3. In-person application: book an appointment at an Australian office in the US and attend the interview.
  4. Pay the fee when you lodge the application. Visa and Mastercard are accepted at all offices; cash and checks are not.
  5. Receive the passport by FedEx (or your own prepaid return envelope requiring a signature). Passports are not sent by US Postal Service.
