By mail only. Passport applications from the US are mailed to the Passport Program in Gatineau, Canada. Consulates do not take passport applications in person; for urgent or exceptional cases, contact the nearest Government of Canada office.

Step by step

  1. Check whether you can use the simplified renewal (adults with an existing adult passport). Child passports cannot be renewed; apply for a new one.
  2. Download and complete the PDF application form for applicants in the US.
  3. Get two passport photos that meet the requirements and list two references.
  4. Pay by credit card in the form's payment section, or include a certified cheque or money order in Canadian dollars payable to the Receiver General for Canada.
  5. Mail the application with your current passport to the Passport Program in Gatineau (courier is recommended for tracking).
  6. Receive your new passport by mail.
